GUADALCANAL
On August 7, 1942 Americans arrived on the islands of Guadalcanal. Allies had the intent to deny Japanese use of supply routes between U.S. and Australia. The allies seized the Japanese bases at Guadalcanal as a way to capture the major Japanese base at Rabul on New Britain.
Japanese were determined to retake Henderson field, and launched an attack on the Marines, which was quickly pushed back by strategically placed machine guns. Another battalion of Japanese were snuck onto the island and tried to attack the Americans, but were too tired from the jungle and cut down by machine guns. The Japanese government refused to accept defeat and sent more troops, but the ships were bombed and they were forced to give up in December 1942.
