Peleliu
Peleliu, a small island in the Palau Islands, was a threat due to the 10,000 Japanese troops and large amount of planes that could attack American troops. The invasion began on September 15th, 1944, and troops were able to push inland. The Japanese anticipated the push and used a strategy to slow down the Americans and make the suffer casualties. Aided by the islands caves, they held the South end of the island for 4 days, until the U.S. troops captured a major airfield and pushed North. They got stuck at Umurbrogol Mountain and engaged in extremely fierce fighting. U.S. Army reinforcements came in to assist, and the battle was ended with an American victory on November 25th.
