LEYTE GULF
The Battle of Leyte Gulf accomplished a couple of things. It crippled the Japanese fleet and allowed the U.S to regain control of the Philippines. Before the battle, an amphibious landing took place on the island of Leyte on October 20th, 1944, causing the Japanese forces to make a plan to distract the American forces with a decoy ship to the North while converging on the American fleet. Some of the Japanese fleet were discovered by U.S. submarines on the 23rd, while the American 3rd fleet continued to chase the decoy.
